Start or join a “friend-raiser”!

#EveryTuesday, we share an idea to show your kindness to the people or community around you! We believe your action will help spread generosity to make a better world!

Start or join a “friend-raiser”!

If you are reading this message, you have surely seen several emails and social media posts urging you to support a fundraiser for the COVID-19 affected, and more recently for the Amphan cyclone affected.

Many of these are from NGOs working on the frontlines, some from individuals like Shishir Joshi, Khusroo Poacha and Bipin Mohanty; some from professionals like Dr Muffazal Lakdawala, others from philanthropists like Archana & Amit Chandra, Luis Miranda, Venkat Krishnan and Amita Chauhan.

You would have read most messages, glanced at some pictures, felt moved by some and made a few contributions here and there. And, then you would have seen some campaigns like the “friendraisers” organised by Vineet Saraiwala engaging IIM Bangalore Alumni, Dimple Parmar with alumni of IIM Calcutta, the Zoom “Mundan” challenge by Soumya Banerjee. Of course there are several offline collection drives in cash and kind in WhatsApp groups and in so many apartment complexes.

Friend-raisers, as the name suggests, make an instant connection, with a common goal to fulfil by reaching out to friends and having some fun along the way by challenging each other, announcing a match for the number of likes or dance moves or whacky looks and smiles!

So, start a friend-raiser for a cause or community you feel strongly about or join one or more organised by your friends! Yes, write your message, add a pic, think of some fun element if you like, do a dare and make a difference together with friends!

"I want to go home!"

#EveryTuesday, we share an idea to show your kindness to the people or community around you! We believe your action will help spread generosity to make a better world!

"I want to go home!" Do you remember when was the last time you said these words?
While you were on a long work tour? After a long vacation? Stranded at an airport because your flight was diverted due to bad weather? When you were in the hospital? While you were posted to a remote area? After a long and difficult day at work?

In the lockdown, you would have experienced yourself or would have heard of your friends and colleagues spending sleepless nights on hearing their child, partner, parent or loved one stranded in a different city say, "I want to come home".

And, we know why, right? Home is where we feel secure, loved and at ease! So what if it is simpler than fancy hotels and exciting locales.

In both cases, whether you wanted to go home or your loved one was waiting to come home, one knew it was a matter of time. One has the resources to reach home when the time would come. One could arrange for food and shelter for the waiting period.

All that millions of Indians stranded in cities are saying is: "I want to go home!" They are pushed to going back home because of no work, so no money to buy food or pay for shelter. Yet we find it so hard to understand their simple ask!

Don't feel helpless watching fellow citizens rushing to catch buses and trains or hopelessly walking their way home.

Here are resources for you to do something about that ache in your heart you feel for them:

The COAST network is a coalition of NGOs across India that are collaborating with each other to help facilitate movement of migrants wanting to go back home & if you wish to donate on Milaap to this cause visit https://www.givingtuesdayindia.org/#featured-donation1

Show your love for nurses and healthcare workers on Florence Nightingale’s 200th birthday!

#EveryTuesday, we share an idea to show your kindness to the people or community around you! We believe your action will help spread generosity to make a better world!

“Wash your hands!”, said Florence Nightingale, many, many years ago.

It is British nurse Florence Nightingale's birthday! She is considered one of the founders of modern nursing. The Lady with the Lamp as she is famously known for her commitment to caring for wounded soldiers, was a tough pioneer whose principles on sanitation, hospital hygiene, good food, fresh air and exercise underpin nursing today as the world battles coronavirus. Born into a wealthy family, she fought her family’s opposition and social constraints to become the world’s most famous nurse. As we discuss about flatening the COVID19 curve, we cannot but remember that she was also a pioneer in data visualisation with the use of infographics, the Nightingale rose diagram, to represent statistical data.

On the bicentenary of the Lady with the Lamp, celebrated as #InternationalNursesDay, support the work of our nurses and healthcare workers.

Make this Mother’s Day truly special!

Whether your mother is with you or near you or far away from you, one gift she is sure to love, is you helping another mother! Yes, mothers are indeed the greatest of givers and they feel compassion for all mothers.

Donate for food support to pregnant women and young mothers of the Korku tribe in the heart of India. Your gift of nutritious food to these young mothers will make this Mother’s Day truly special for your mother!

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a food crisis in several households. It has been affecting the health and wellbeing of the Korku tribe mothers and children in Madhya Pradesh. In this time of lockdowns with reverse migration, no wage earning options locally and Anganwadis shut down, the food crises at homes is increasing rapidly. Most vulnerable malnourished children and high-risk pregnant mothers have felt the brunt. At this time, they need protein rich and micronutrient-laden food to overcome malnutrition and their diminishing immunity. Spandan Samaj Seva Samiti needs your support to reach them in an emergency relief mode to provide food and nutrition for at least the next 3 months.
